How to Improve Scan Quality When Scanning with a 3Shape Lab Scanner

07 November 2023 | Updated 4.9.2026

In some cases, the quality of scans produced by a 3Shape lab scanner may be insufficient. Poor scan quality can cause issues later in the design process.

The most common signs of insufficient scan quality are:

  • The scan appears distorted or layered.
  • There are holes in the scan.
  • Parts of the model are missing from the scan.

Possible root causes include:

  • The scanner has not been calibrated or was not calibrated correctly.
  • The object cannot be scanned or requires scan spray.
  • The PC does not meet the minimum requirements or is not correctly updated.
  • The scanner has a hardware malfunction.

Instructions to Improve Scan Quality

Step 1: Make sure the PC meets the minimum software requirements. The requirements can be checked in the software User Manual.

Step 2: Make sure all available operating system updates and drivers are installed.

Step 3: Calibrate the scanner using the provided calibration object(s).

Step 4: Check the calibration object for any visible defects.

Step 5: Check the scanner for any loud or unusual noises.

Step 6: Make sure the scan object is centered on the scan interface plate.

For smaller objects, position them as close to the center of the plate as possible.

Step 7: Make sure the object is securely fixed to the scan interface plate or in the scanning fixture to prevent it from moving or shaking during scanning.

Step 8: Try scanning a different object.

Step 9: Spray all reflective parts, such as metal or glossy plastic, with scan spray.

Scan spray may also be required for objects with translucent parts or very contrasting colors.

Step 10: Make sure the table where the scanner is located is stable and that the scanner is positioned securely.

Step 11: Check the scanner rubber and door to make sure that no light is entering the scanner.

This step can be disregarded when scanning with an E-Scanner.

Outcome

Following the recommendations above should help produce good-quality scan data.
