Insufficient Scan Quality When Scanning with a 3Shape Lab Scanner

Overview of Unexpected Scan Quality

In some cases, when scanning with a 3Shape lab scanner, the scan result may not be of the expected quality. For example:

  • The scan may look distorted or layered.
  • There may be holes in the scans.
  • Parts of the model may not be scanned.

Affected scanner models and software versions: Any model, any version.

Possible Root Causes

  • The scanner has not been calibrated correctly or has not been calibrated for a long time.
  • The object is not scannable or has not been properly prepared for scanning.
  • The PC does not meet the requirements or is not up to date.
  • Hardware malfunction of the scanner.

Possible Solutions

Step 1: Make sure the PC meets the requirements and that the latest system updates and drivers are installed. Check the latest PC catalog, which can be requested from your reseller, or the Dental System User Manual for current system requirements. Step 2: Calibrate the scanner according to the requirements listed in the article "What to consider when calibrating Lab Scanners".

Step 3: Check the calibration object for any visible defects.

Step 4: Listen for any loud or unusual sounds from the scanner.

Step 5: Make sure the object is centered on the scan interface plate. The smaller the object, the more it should be placed toward the center of the plate.

Step 6: Make sure the object is securely fixed on the scan interface plate or in the scanning fixture to prevent it from moving or shaking during scanning.

Step 7: Try scanning a different object.

Step 8: Spray all reflective parts, such as metal or glossy plastic, with scan spray. If the object has translucent parts or very contrasting colors, scan spray may also be required. See the relevant article for more information.

Step 9: Make sure the table where the scanner is located is stable and that the scanner is in a stable position.

Step 10: Check the rubber and scanner door to make sure no light is entering the scanner.
