Navigating the Main Functions in Dx: Diagnose, Analyze, and Present

22 September 2025 | Updated 1.12.2025

This article is relevant for Dx Standard and Dx Plus users.

Introduction

This article introduces the three core functions of Dx – Diagnose, Analyze, and Present – and explains how each supports clinical decision-making, patient monitoring, and communication. Mastering these tools helps dental professionals efficiently assess oral health conditions and engage patients in their treatment journey.

Prerequisites

Before using these functions, ensure:

  • You have access to Dx via the 3Shape Unite platform
  • You are using compatible TRIOS scans
  • You are familiar with basic intraoral scanning workflows
  1. Diagnose (Dx Plus exclusive)

The Diagnose function enables inspection and comparison of AI-detected key oral health conditions:

  • Inspect mode: View a single scan to assess conditions such as surface caries, tooth wear, gingival recession, and plaque.
  • Compare mode: Compare two scans over time using a timeline and slider to visualize progression.

In Diagnose, Dx Plus lists the key oral health conditions it can detect. Click a condition in the provided list to view the diagnostic results for that specific condition. Use the classification legend below each condition to interpret the severity level associated with each color.

You can manually hide, adjust or remove classifications if needed.

For detailed guidance on each condition, see next steps.

2. Analyze

The Analyze function you can use either:

  • Scan pair mode: Use difference maps and threshold bars to quantify changes in tooth shape, tooth movement, or gingiva shape between two scans.
  • Single scan mode: To apply tools like cross-section, distance ruler, and surface area.

3. Present

The Present function helps communicate findings to patients using:

  • Simulation mode: Animates changes over time.
  • Slider mode: Interactive overlay of two scans.
  • Side by side mode: Displays scans next to each other for direct comparison.

Introduction: Understanding Dx Plus

Dx is available in two versions—Standard and Plus—tailored to different clinical needs.

Dx Plus is 3Shape’s AI-powered diagnostic software designed to assist in clinical decision-making and patient communication. Exclusively compatible with TRIOS 6 scans, Dx Plus supports dental professionals in detecting and monitoring key oral health conditions including surface caries, proximal caries, tooth wear, gingival recession, and plaque efficiently.

Key Points

  • AI-Assisted Detection: Dx Plus uses AI trained on thousands of scans to assist in identifying surface caries, tooth wear, gingival recession, plaque, and proximal caries (not AI-based). It provides visual overlays and confidence scores to support clinical judgment.
  • Monitoring Over Time: Dx enables comparison of scans over time, helping clinicians track progression of oral health conditions and treatment outcomes. Documentation is automated and instantly accessible.
  • Enhanced Patient Communication: Dx helps with patient understanding, trust, and engagement in their oral health, with clear visualizations and integration with the DentalHealth App.
