How to perform an upgrade of 3Shape Dental System

This article provides a structured approach to upgrading the 3Shape Dental System efficiently. For additional support, refer to the official documentation or contact technical support.

Before you begin, ensure you are ready with the following prerequisites:

System Requirements:
Ensure your PC meets the hardware and software requirements for the Dental System version you would like to install. This includes CPU, RAM, storage, and supported operating systems. Running the software on compatible hardware is crucial for performance and future updates. 

Scanner Compatibility:
Dental System 2024 and above may not support some older 3Shape lab scanners. During upgrade, a popup window will show a list of compatible scanners. Check this carefully before proceeding.

Internet Connection:
It is strongly recommended to keep the system connected to the internet during upgrade process for full feature access.

Upgrade Process

When installing 3Shape Dental System, you can choose from two main installation types:

  • Standard Installation/Upgrade - is a quick way to install or upgrade your system with only a few clicks (backup, materials update and download)
  • Custom Installation/Upgrade - allows you to customize your installation/upgrade settings in the process (you can choose the backup type, customize the materials update, choose sites for downloading materials, etc.)
  1. Standard Installation

Standard Installation is a quick and simple installation process. Once selected, the installer runs automatically, requiring only a few clicks to complete. The entire process takes just a few minutes. This option is ideal for users who want a hassle-free installation or upgrade with default settings, including backup, materials update, and download.

      2. Custom Installation

Custom Installation allows users to configure settings and choose between different installation types to suit their specific needs. Here is a detailed description of Standalone & Server install installation types:

Standalone Installation - recommended when running all 3Shape Dental System applications on a single computer (e.g., scanner-PC). Software and orders data are stored locally on the computer. Ideal for single-user environments where the software does not need to be accessed from multiple PCs.

Server Install / Network Client Installation - a client-server setup allows multiple PCs to work in a network, sharing orders and files efficiently. Enables multiple operators to create orders, scan, and design simultaneously. Consists of:

  • Server PC: Stores all software and order database locally, making the drives accessible as network drives.
  • Client PCs: Connect to the software and order database on the Server PC.

This setup enhances productivity and collaboration within a lab environment.

When using Custom Installation, it is possible to:

  • Choose backup preferences.
  • Customize materials update settings.
  • Select download sites for materials.

Steps to proceed with Standalone Installation:

  1. Launch the 3Shape Dental System Installer as Administrator.
  2. Select Custom Installation.
  3. Choose Standalone Installation from the drop-down menu in the Custom Settings window.

     4. Press continue > choose whether quick or full backup type > press continue to start the upgrade.

     5. Wait till installation/upgrade process is completed > click Finish to complete the upgrade and launch Control Panel.

 

Steps to proceed with Server Installation: 

  1. Launch the 3Shape Dental System Installer as Administrator.
  2. Select Custom Installation.
  3. Choose Server Install from the drop-down menu in the Customer Settings window.

      4. Press continue > choose whether quick or full backup type > press continue to start the upgrade.

      5. Wait till installation/upgrade process is completed > click Finish to complete the upgrade and launch Control Panel.

NOTE: After a Server Installation, run Dental System on Client PCs, installation/upgrade will automatically start. Repeat this operation on each client PC separately.
